did you know?

  • In a recent survey, only 4% of public sector managers said that under-performance was handled "very well" in their organisations compared to 22% in the private sector.
  • Poor performance manifests itself in many ways such as a worker who is slow, inflexible, consistently misses deadlines or, although efficient, finds it difficult to maintain good working relationships with colleagues and clients.
  • The effects of poor performance can be widespread, impacting on the productivity of the company as a whole as well as the morale and efficiency of other staff who bear the brunt of a fellow worker's under-performance.
  • Failure to deal correctly with poor performance which results in dismissal can leave employers open to tribunal claims. As of 1 February, the maximum compensatory award for unfair dismissal has been increased to £63,000, but if the dismissal is tainted by discrimination then there is no limit on the amount of compensation that can be awarded. The cost to employers of defending a tribunal claim has recently been estimated at £9,000.

Then attend our Practical Briefing which will start with registration and breakfast at 8.30 a.m. The Briefing itself commences at 9.00 a.m. and ends at 11.00 a.m. when the presenters will be available should you wish to discuss any of the issues covered in more detail over coffee.

The Briefing will follow an interactive format, with light-hearted role plays by the Employment Team, in order to identify and avoid the pitfalls when dealing with poor performance in the workplace. You will get practical tips on the steps that you can take to avoid poor performance in the first place, what you can do when it does happen and how you can minimise the risk of tribunal claims where the only solution is dismissal of the employee concerned. Take this opportunity to learn from the mistakes of others: as Eleanor Roosevelt said, "you can't live long enough to make them all yourself!"
