Des is a partner in our intellectual property & technology team advising on all areas of intellectual property and IT law. Examples include: IP exploitation and protection for universities, the NHS and the private sector; IP and IT aspects of corporate transactions; negotiating substantial IT outsourcing contracts for local authorities and private sector providers; and software licensing and data protection.
Des has a particular insight into technology transfer, having completed secondments at two research intensive universities. He is a regular speaker on the exploitation of intellectual property and has a keen interest in the challenges faced by users and developers of open source software.
Recent projects include: advising a local authority on the procurement of a £10m wide area network; advising a university on all aspects of research commercialisation, including drafting standard documentation and training staff on its use; advising NHS Trusts on collaborations for the exploitation of software and the commercialisation of a novel diagnostic technique; negotiating contracts for a supplier of substantial outsourced IT services; advising an international organisation on trade mark infringement; the successful cancellation of an “offshore” domain name based upon infringement of a client’s copyright.
